How to Use This Calculator

Inputs

  • Monthly Revenue - Your total card-not-present processing volume per month.
  • Average Transaction - The typical order value. This determines per-dispute product loss.
  • Chargeback Rate - The percentage of transactions that result in disputes. Check your processor dashboard for the exact number.
  • Processor - Your primary payment processor. Fees differ significantly (Stripe $15, PayPal $20, Square $0).
  • Product Type - Physical goods have shipping costs and higher COGS. Digital products have lower per-dispute losses but higher chargeback rates.

What the Numbers Mean

Below 0.5% - Healthy

Normal operations. Focus on maintaining current prevention measures.

0.5% to 0.9% - Watch Closely

Comfortably under the threshold, but acquirers watch trajectory. Implement prevention now.

0.9% to 1.5% - Acquirer Watch

Below Visa's 1.5% VAMP excessive threshold, but acquirers often impose tighter internal limits and reserves here.

1.5% and up - VAMP Excessive

At or above the excessive threshold (from April 2026). Enrolled merchants pay $8 per dispute; sustained status risks termination.

Calculator Methodology

Cost per dispute = Bank fee + (Transaction value x COGS%) + Shipping + $8 labor + $25 dispute response time

COGS percentages: Physical goods 40%, Digital products 10%, SaaS 15%, Travel 60%, Food delivery 50%. These are industry averages; your actual COGS may differ.

Prevention ROI assumes $0.07/transaction for combined screening tools and a 60% chargeback reduction rate. This is conservative; 3D Secure alone typically delivers 70-80% reduction for fraud chargebacks.

VAMP thresholds from the Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program fact sheet. The merchant excessive threshold is 1.5% for North America from 1 April 2026 (previously 2.2%), with a 1,500-case monthly minimum to enroll and an $8-per-dispute fee. Visa's Above Standard tier (0.5%-0.69%) applies to acquirer portfolios, not individual merchants. Acquirers commonly enforce tighter internal limits.

FAQ

How does the chargeback cost calculator work?

Enter your monthly revenue, average transaction value, current chargeback rate, payment processor, and product type. The calculator models total cost per dispute (bank fee + lost product + shipping + labor + dispute time), monthly and annual totals, Visa VAMP monitoring status, and prevention ROI projection.

What costs are included?

Bank/processor fee (varies by processor), lost product value (based on COGS percentage for your product type), shipping costs (physical goods and food delivery), fulfillment labor ($8 per dispute), and dispute response time ($25 per dispute). Monitoring program fines are shown separately.

What chargeback rate should I target?

Below 0.5% is healthy. Between 0.5% and 0.9% warrants attention. From April 2026, 1.5% is the Visa VAMP merchant excessive threshold for North America (down from 2.2%), and enrolled merchants are charged $8 per dispute. Always compare against your industry average, not the overall 0.6% e-commerce average.

Is the prevention ROI estimate accurate?

It is conservative. The calculator assumes 60% chargeback reduction at $0.07 per transaction. In practice, 3D Secure alone delivers 70-80% reduction for fraud chargebacks, and free measures like billing descriptor updates can reduce disputes 10-30% with no cost.
